Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a non-essential amino acid that helps promote normal brain function by blocking stress-related messages from reaching receptor sites in the central nervous system. It can help limit thoughts of anxiousness, and may be useful in the treatment of disorders associated with emotional stress, such as low sex drive and hypertension.

It is made in the body from the amino acid glutamic. It acts as a mild tranquilizer in the body, and its effects are similar to prescription drugs such as Valium and other tranquilizers. Because It helps to suppress the firing of nerve cells in the brain, it may be beneficial for treatment of disorders linked to over stimulation of the brain's motor centers, such as epilepsy and attention deficit disorder (ADD, ADHD).

Research shows that it may also help treat alcoholism by lowering cravings, which have been reported to react to treatment with glutamic acid as well.

Men with enlarged prostate glands may benefit since this amino acid plays a major role in the balancing and regulating levels of sex hormones in the body. Some studies show it increasing levels of human growth hormone (HGH) in the body, which can lead to an increase in muscle mass and tissue, and a decrease in general body fat.

It is taken in capsule or powder forms and can be found in health food stores and  herbal retailers. The normal dosage is 3 to 5 grams, but some studies have used doses as high as 18 grams. You should take it with care as large doses may actually increase feelings of anxiety, cause numbness, tingling, and shortness of breath.

It has been used in the treatment of depression, bipolar disorder, seizures, premenstrual dysphoricr, and anxiety. It is an inhibitory neurotransmitter to block the transmission of an impulse from one cell to another in the central nervous system. It improves sleep cycles and can lead to more restful sleeping. It also has a stabilizing effect on blood pressure, and is an effective analgesic, eliminating pain from chronic conditions such as arthritis and lower back pain.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid naturally stimulates the anterior pituitary gland to secrete higher levels of human growth hormone (HGH). It signals the pituitary to release HGH, a hormone that is known for its muscle building properties,  as well as its ability to breakdown and utilize body fat. Human growth hormone is produced, stored and secreted by the pituitary gland located at the base of the brain.

It has also been used to treat epilepsy and hypertension where it is believed to induce tranquility in people with a high activity of manic behavior.

Levels in the brain may influence seizure activity in individuals with epilepsy. It inhibits nerve cells in the brain from firing and setting off seizures. Gamma-aminobutyric acid analog gabapentin has been approved in the United States for the treatment of epileptic seizures and post-herpetic neuralgia.

Side Effects:

There are few if any side effects. Some mild tingling around the face and neck area after supplementing with GABA have been seen. Some users also notice a brief and mild change in heart rate or breathing patterns. These effects quickly disappear and are not harmful.
