Geena Davis Biography And Filmography:

Since the mid 1980s, this tall former fashion model has created a winning screen personality that has made her one of Hollywood's most coveted actors. While Geena Davis' charm has been well used in odd comedies like "Fletch" (1985) with Chevy Chase; "Beetlejuice" (1988) with Alec Baldwin; "Quick Change" (1990) with Bill Murray. She has also shown a skill for drama, with an Oscar winning role in "The Accidental Tourist" (1988), and "Earth Girls Are Easy" (1988) with Jim Carrey, about a spaceship with three furry aliens lands in a California girl's swimming pool, so she makes friends with them.

Geena Davis has avoided many of the common roles offered today's actresses in that she's never played a character who was dying of an incurable disease, been cast as a prostitute or played a helpless woman in danger. Her striking body type has given her integrity to play athletes and other unusually physical female roles.

Geena Davis first appeared on television in 1982 in the recurring role of the maid Karen Nicholson hired by gifted young conservative Alex P Keaton (Michael J Fox) on the hit NBC sitcom "Family Ties". Her dumb blonde role mesmerized both her employer and a huge primetime audience. She next appeared as Wendy Killian, a brilliant research assistant providing one of several rivals to Dabney Coleman's lead talk show host "Buffalo Bill" (1983-84).

Davis moved up to sitcom star as "Sara" (1985), a young single lawyer sharing a San Francisco apartment with three other lawyers. Her first leading role was as a soap opera performer who shares a dressing room with the cross-dressing Dustin Hoffman in "Tootsie" (1982). She moved on to star in David Cronenberg's remake of "The Fly" (1986), cast opposite Jeff Goldblum whom she married the following year. Off screen, Goldblum and Davis made for a great celebrity couple - both were tall, skinny, a little silly and very much in love and they gave remarkably entertaining interviews. Their marriage, however, failed and they filed for divorce in 1990.

The actress surprised many by winning an Oscar for her role of the nutty dog trainer who wins the heart of a troubled William Hurt in Lawrence Kasdan's comedy-drama "The Accidental Tourist" (1988). She made a much larger impact, and earned her first Best Actress nomination, as Thelma, an oppressed and slow housewife who finds fame, freedom and herself on an outlaw road trip in Ridley Scott's "Thelma & Louise" (1991) with Susan Sarandon. Filmed after her divorce from Goldblum this movie became a cult favorite for many feminists.

Geena Davis next was cast in Penny Marshall's baseball comedy drama, "A League of Their Own" (1992) with Tom Hanks, Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell, and won praise for her portrayal of Dottie Hinson, a softball player in rural Oregon awaiting the return of her husband from overseas in WWII. Davis then played a career driven reporter hunting the "Hero" (1992) with Dustin Hoffman and Andy Garcia, who saved a plane full of accident survivors from death by smoke inhalation.

In 1993, Davis married Finland's hottest action film star Renny Harlin and the couple formed "Forge Productions" the following year. "Angie" (1994) was a stretch for the striking leading lady as Geena played a working class Italian-American New Yorker who gets pregnant out of wedlock but refuses to do the right thing. Davis then appeared in the romantic comedy "Speechless" (1994), a story set in the world of politics. Starring opposite "Beetlejuice" co-star Michael Keaton as contending speech writers who fall in love, she also made her producing debut with Renny Harlin on this movie. She moved up to executive producer on the television movie courtroom thriller "Mistrial" (1996).

Married to an action film maker, Geena Davis can't be blamed for at least trying her skills at the action thriller game. The possible jump in international box-office power seemed a valuable prize as the producing team joined forces for the pirate adventure "Cutthroat Island" (1995). Lead by Harlin, the film had complex stunts, energetic filming, painstaking production design and extraordinary battle sequences.

The actress was then worked in "The Long Kiss Goodnight" (1996). Cast with a sexy hot Shane Black script and superstar supporting actor Samuel L. Jackson and $70 million, the film delivered the action. Geena charmed many with her role of a housewife whose amnesia keeps her from remembering her past as a government killer. Her attempt to come back into television with the ABC sitcom "The Geena Davis Show" (2000-2001) playing a materialistic woman whose short-lived romance takes her from being single to being the married mother of two after only six dates also failed to hit with audiences. Geena and Harlin divorced in 1998.

Geena then found a smash hit with the popular children's film "Stuart Little" (1999), about the Little family who adopt a charming young mouse named Stuart, but the family cat wants rid of him. She would also reprise the role for the 2002 sequel, "Stuart Little 2", and "Stuart Little 3: Call of the Wild" (2005).

Geena Davis then gave television another try, taking the lead in producer Rod Lurie's political-minded television series "Commander in Chief" (2005-) as Mackenzie Allen, a political independent who became vice president as a lure for women voters who, after the death of her running mate, takes to the Oval Office as president despite strong opposition from both her allies and her enemies. She wrapped the year with the comedy "Accidents Happen" (2009) about 15 year old Billy Conway who has been an accident magnet since he was a kid. When he and his best friend cause an almighty crash with a bowling ball and a moving car, Billy must face up to his family's history and learn that sometimes someone is to blame and that sometimes... well, accidents just happen.
