Indexing your Site - The 80/20 Rule

The 80/20 rules means that 80 percent of your traffic will come from the top 20% of search engines. It's important to use these tools to bring people to your site. You can't just build a site and expect visitors to flock to your pages.
Different search engines use different technologies to index, and find your pages. Robots like InfoSeek Ultra, Hotbot, Webcrawler, and Lycos can spider your site and index every page. This way you don't have to add each page, one at a time.

Alta-Vista is a real-time robot, meaning that your entry is usually available within a matter of hours. Other robots can take up to six weeks to add all your pages to their databases.

The Top 10 List
The top 10 places you want to be listed in are:

Lycos, Yahoo, Infoseek, Alta-Vista, Open Text, Web Crawler, Hotbot, Excite, Magellan, and various what's new sites.

Automated indexing
In addition to robots, there are a number of services that will announce, or index, your site for free. The biggest right now is POSTMASTER. This service automates your listings in several dozen sites for free. It is important to test your listings after you use an automated service as some are more reliable then others.

Starting Point is another good place to get the word out.
